Before You Redecorate: Why Having a Plan Makes All the Difference

Some simple interior design principles to consider before making changes to your home.

Whether you’ve recently moved house, are planning to update a tired room or have been putting off a decorating project for years, knowing where to start can sometimes be the hardest part.

With endless inspiration available online, it’s tempting to fall in love with individual colours, furnishings and finishes.  But without considering how everything works together, even the loveliest purchases can leave a room feeling unfinished.

Here are a few things I always encourage homeowners to consider before embarking on a room transformation.

1.    Start with the layout, not the shopping list

Before choosing a new sofa or dining table, think about how you use the space.

Where do people naturally walk?  Is there enough room to move comfortably around furniture?  Are there architectural features you’d like to highlight?

Furniture proportions matter too.  A small sofa can look lost in a generous room, while oversized pieces can overwhelm a smaller space.  Planning the layout first helps avoid expensive mistakes.

2.    Think beyond individual colours

Choosing a paint colour is often where people begin, but it’s worth considering the entire room before committing.

Flooring, upholstery, window treatments and lighting all influence how colours appear and interact.

A cohesive scheme doesn’t mean everything needs to match. In fact, introducing contrast through different materials, patterns and textures can make a room far more interesting.

The key is ensuring there’s a connection between the elements, whether that’s a recurring colour, a complementary material or a shared design influence.

3.    Don’t leave lighting until last

Lighting can completely change how a room looks and feels, particularly during the darker winter months.

Rather than relying on one central ceiling light, consider layering different sources.  Table lamps, wall lights, pendants and subtle accent lighting can create warmth, highlight features and make a space more versatile.

Think about lighting early in the design process, especially if you’re planning electrical work.

4.    Give your home some personality

The most memorable interiors aren’t necessarily the ones following the latest trends.

Incorporating treasured furniture, artwork, interesting textures and pieces collected over time helps create a home that feels individual.

Sometimes it’s the unexpected combinations that work best, provided there’s an overall sense of balance.

Bringing it all together

A successful room design isn’t about buying the most expensive furnishings.  It’s about making thoughtful choices that work together and suit the way you live.

And when you’re investing in a substantial room transformation, having a clear design plan can make the process considerably easier.

Through The Interior Mixologist, I help homeowners develop complete design schemes, select complementary furnishings and finishes, and source the pieces that bring everything together.

If you’re planning a transformation and would appreciate some creative direction and professional guidance, I’d love to hear about your project.
